In the UK a large share of the population lives in and around London, but significant urban clusters are also located in central Britain, the Scottish lowlands, southern Wales, and the east of Northern Ireland. The UK is connected to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel, and also lies along important sea lanes. Road transport is the most important mode of passenger and freight transport.
The UK has a national target to reduce GHG emissions from transportby 34–45% below 2019 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions in the sector by 2050, in line with its target to become a net-zero economy by 2050. The country has set additional targets for 2030 for sustainable aviation fuels and aims to end the sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by that year, followed by other vehicle categories over the next decade.
