Project: Mobilize Net Zero
How can Germany contribute to multilateral alliances for climate protection in the transport sector? A new project by Agora Verkehrswende and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) addresses this question.
As part of the project "Mobilize Net Zero - Facility for the Global Transport Transition," Agora Verkehrswende is developing proposals on how Germany can make an effective contribution to climate protection in the transport sector in multilateral alliances for the benefit of all parties involved.
With the signing of the Paris Agreement, the international community has for the first time agreed on binding targets to limit climate change. Since then, more than 145 countries have set or intend to set targets that set deadlines for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to net zero. Together, these countries are responsible for almost 90 percent of today's global greenhouse gas emissions.
This shows that developed and developing countries are now working on the same timetable to achieve climate neutrality by mid-century. It is clear that the climate goals can only be achieved if the international community works together - even if the reasons for individual countries to take climate action may differ.
Transport accounts for one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. This makes transport the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases among all sectors, and it plays a crucial role in achieving climate goals. Yet only 24 countries have committed to greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for transport in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
It is now necessary to develop common solutions to implement net-zero targets in the transport sector and to achieve them in close international cooperation - rather than individual countries failing to achieve them individually.
The project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. Agora Verkehrswende is the implementing partner and recipient of funding from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
