Project: International Power-to-X Hub
PtX (Power-to-X) is a collective term for green hydrogen as well as synthetic electricity-based fuels generated on its basis, also known as e-fuels.
While electric drivetrains are the most efficient solution for reducing CO2 emissions from road transport, long-haul air traffic and maritime shipping in particular will continue to rely on liquid fuels. These fuels can be produced in a climate-neutral way from renewable hydrogen and sustainably sourced carbon dioxide.
The project aims to develop a compact overview of the role of PtX products in the energy transition in transport. Energy efficiency, availability, cost and sustainability are considered decisive factors.
The project focuses on three main areas:
- Detailed analysis of suitable uses of PtX in transport, taking into account the factors mentioned above
- Maritime shipping and long-haul air transport, which are considered "no-regret" options, where battery-electric propulsion is not practical
- International cooperation with partner countries for the introduction of PtX in their domestic markets
The results will be published in separate papers. Agora Verkehrswende will also organise trainings and workshops on PtX. The project partner is the International PtX Hub, which aims to support the development of sustainable PtX markets in regions favourable for renewable energy production, which is a building block for the transition to climate neutrality. The trainings and workshops will be conducted in collaboration with Agora Energiewende.
