Project:Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC)

Developing strategies, measures and instruments to decarbonise the transport sector in Thailand.

At COP 26, Thailand announced its new targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and climate neutrality by 2065. The updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2030 or, with international support, by 40 per cent. In Thailand's NDCs, energy and transport are named as priority sectors because they alone account for around 70 per cent of the country's emissions. These two sectors also play an important role in Thailand's economic development. Electrification of the transport sector is a priority in the Thai government's climate strategy, as the sector is responsible for around 30 per cent of total emissions.

Agora Verkehrswende is involved in the project consortium to support Thailand in realising its goal of CO2 neutrality by 2050 and to learn from each other. The organisation of international knowledge and technology transfer for the transformation of the transport sector will be complemented by recommendations on regulatory, structural and strategic developments. The project includes the development of technology options for the decarbonisation of the transport sector, measures to promote electromobility and the expansion of charging infrastructure, as well as the development of implementation strategies for the pilot city of Bangkok.

The Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC) is a joint programme of eight organisations and is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK). The implementing organisations are the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), SGTech - Naresuan University, the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT), Thai Renewable Energy Association - RE100, the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Integrated Energy Systems (CINES), Agora Energiewende and Agora Verkehrswende.
